Snoring

Snoring is a common affliction. It is unusual in that the affected person is often oblivious to the problem whilst those around him or her can be severely affected.

Whilst often the subject of jokes, snoring can cause serious social and relationship problems. Bad snoring can also be a sign of sleep apnoea syndrome  which can have serious health consequences.

Contributing factors for snoring include obstruction to the “upper airway” (this refers to the passages that connect the mouth and nose to the upper part of the windpipe or “trachea”). Such obstruction can be caused by nasal blockage, enlarged tonsils, a small lower jaw or problems with the "soft palate" (the flap of tissue at the back of the mouth).

Snoring can often be improved by weight loss where appropriate.  Sometimes anti-snoring splints can help.  These are worn in the mouth at night.  If simple measures are ineffective, surgery may help in selected cases.
