Ear Pain
The ear canal and eardrum are sensitive structures. Pain arising from this area can be severe and require the strongest painkillers alongside other treatment. The medical term for ear pain is Otalgia.
The ear shares some nerves with other structures, notably the teeth, jaw joint (also called temporomandibular joint or "TMJ") and the part of the spine within the neck (cervical spine).
For this reason ear pain can be divided into two groups. In the first group the pain is coming from the ear itself. In the second, called "referred earache" - pain felt in the ear is actually coming from somewhere else. A careful description of the pain and clinical examination usually pinpoints the underlying cause to allow effective treatment.
