Facial Pain
Facial pain comes in many different varieties. The location, duration, the nature of the pain and any associated symptoms may give clues as to the underlying cause. Further information is provided by an examination.
Common types of pain include:
- Sinus-related facial pain
- Migraine
- Tension headache
- Pain caused by dental problems
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain
- Pain following shingles
- Trigeminal neuralgia
When no cause can be found the pain is referred to as "Atypical facial pain". In this case the emphasis is placed on effective treatment.
Treatment of facial pain varies according to the cause. Sometimes the opinion of other medical specialists such as neurologists, maxillofacial surgeons or pain specialists is helpful.
