Nasal Blockage
A blocked nose may be a result of fixed problems with the structure of the nose, such as a bend in the nasal septum, the vertical partition that divides the nose into two halves. It can also be due to inflammation in the nose and sinuses (such as allergic rhinitis) or a combination of both of these. Swelling of the turbinates (normal structures that protrude into the nose to help warm and moisten the air we breathe in), nasal polyps or enlargement of the adenoids can also cause nasal blockage.
Endoscopic examination of the nose and sinus openings may help to clarify what the cause is, and this is easily performed in the clinic.
Medications, surgery or a combination of the two maybe required to address the problem, depending on the underlying cause.
